Like many many people both in the USA and abroad I was horrified by the news of the shooting of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School at Newtown, USA – the dreadful work of a crazed young man.
This image was inspired by that story. Here is an X-ray of a child with a collapsed lobe in each lung. The chest is perforated by shining shards of light. Behind are the stone pavement and layers of red with an eyeball-like image representing the slaughter and the world looking on. These two elements are intertwined. The image is ambiguous, on one hand it can be interpreted for the violence – the shards may represent the bullets passing in, on the other they could represent light and hope shining out from the heart.
