Self-Portrait 3; Framed

This has been a journey of self discovery so far, and one that I still find exciting.

Today’s offering shows the man behind the man and, if you look carefully, the shadowy man behind that. At the back the ID, dark and inaccessible – there, but not there – in this image it’s almost invisible nevertheless its presence is crucial in controlling the colour properties of overlying layers. In between the EGO, attempting to mediate between ID and reality, harbouring the internalised part of my career as a radiologist. At the front the SUPER-EGO keeping a watch on what the EGO is doing, sorting out problems of the ID, defining our concepts of right, wrong, guilt, and at the same time keeping a cautious eye on you, the viewer.

Not everyone agrees with Freud in this simplistic model, but its a useful structure to look at the psychic apparatus.

This is great. Glad you mentioned the third shadowy figure at the back, I had to look hard to find it. This whole image ties in so well with Freud’s theories. A very strong image.

Thankyou so much. After a series of such nice comments from artists I respect, how can I top this?? The pressure is on. Tony
